DEEP WATER

Deep Water is a live performance experience focusing on awareness and behaviour change regarding ocean waste.

Ocean and nature inspired music will be performed by the Sydney Art Quartet supported by ocean conservationist “artivist” (artist/activist) Marina DeBris, installations by Rox De Luca, and movement artists Allie Graham and Remy Rochester modelling Marina’s reclaimed marine plastic repurposed into “trashion” haute couture.

Marina Debris

The work of Australian based ‘artivist’ Marina DeBris provides a unique way to communicate the harm that we are causing our oceans. Rather than using overwhelming statistics, her art makes this issue personal to the viewer, forcing us to come face to face with items we use daily and often discard without a second thought.

Marina’s obsession began after moving to Venice Beach, CA. In a simple effort to maintain the beach’s beauty, she picked up rubbish, but she soon realized that her efforts were achieving little and turned to art to raise awareness.

Since returning to Sydney more than 8 years ago, Marina is getting her ‘materials’ from local beaches. In 2017, Marina’s piece the ‘Inconvenience Store’ won three awards at Sculpture by the Sea. She was awarded the Waverley Art Prize and most recently the Helen Lempriere Scholarship. Her work has been exhibited internationally, throughout Australia and was recently featured in Harper's Bazaar Magazine.

Using humour, Marina aims to startle viewers into taking a closer look at things we usually ignore. She hopes to encourage people to rethink their use of disposable items and ultimately reduce waste in general.
