The Darkening Ecliptic

ERN MALLEY (Hoax of 1943)

Described as one of the the greatest literary hoaxes of all time that made shockwaves around the world and led to the prosecution and conviction of the editor of the Australian art and literary journal, “Angry Penguins”.

The hoax was concocted by two Australian poets, Harold Stewart and James McAuley, while working in Army Intelligence. They duped Max Harris, the young leader of the modernist movement and editor of Angry Penguins, into believing that Ern's sister, Ethel, had found an unpublished manuscript while sorting through her brother's personal belongings after his premature death at the age of twenty-five.

Join us in the heart of Redfern to explore the poetry of Ern Malley and be taken on a journey to the 1940’s.
